Inhaltsangabe

The Works of John Dryden Volume 4 is a 19th-century collected edition of Restoration-era writings, presenting influential plays and critical essays. It is significant as a scholarly compilation that preserves and organizes Dryden's contributions to English drama, poetry, and literary criticism, particularly his development of heroic drama. This volume includes major dramatic works such as Almanzor and Almahide, alongside essays that examine the structure and purpose of heroic plays. Through Restoration era English literature and tragedy plays, Dryden's writing reflects the political and cultural tensions of 17th-century England, where themes of monarchy, war, and personal honour shaped literary expression. His dramatic style often blends elevated language with intense emotional and moral conflict. This aligns with Dryden political power and ambition themes in drama, where characters struggle with loyalty, authority, and competing desires within unstable political landscapes. The narrative settings frequently explore war, succession, and romantic rivalry as reflections of broader societal order.
