The handbook includes carefully selected illustrative examples wherever necessary together with the practical problems proposed to the students for solution. This treatise probably presents a more complete account of recent logical investigations and advances than any other one book which is quite apparent from the success the book has achieved since its publication. This is now the fourth edition of the book apart from several printings in several countries. It is thought that decided advantages will be discovered in the arrangement of the matter by those who have occasion to carefully analyse the contents in the class room. 320 pp. Artikel-Nr. 60830

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents 1. Laying the foundations determining policies securing support and setting a pattern for education in penal institutions. 2. The development of centralized leadership for correctional education. 3. Solving practical problems making education function within prison walls. 4. Does correctional education pay dividends. 5. A statistical interpretation of the New York State program of correctional education. 6. Summary of recommendations. Appendix. Modern prison education attempts to bring the best practices of public education into the prison and to adapt them to the prison situation. It also attempts to develop these practices so that they will function satisfactorily in protecting society against further depredation by criminals. The problems involved in building genuine education programs and making them function as effective agencies in reforming the attitudes and habits of men and women who have rebelled in one way or another against social controls are numerous and complex. From the formulation of the philosophy and the establishment of objectives through the molding of the public opinion securing cooperation from institutional heads and personnel planning and organizing a program to devising techniques which will arouse and maintain the interests and efforts of the inmates the path of the prison educator is beset with problems as interesting as they are unique and puzzling. This is one frontier which is by no means closed. And although they must use different techniques tools and weapons the pioneers in correctional education face a region almost untracked and in the opinion of those responsible for this book full of possibilities for improvement. This book cites concrete examples of how the foregoing problems have been and are being solved in a practical manner. 187 pp. Artikel-Nr. 58372

Publications referred to in the text. Index. For some time the author has been engaged in teaching biometrical methods to students in America and China. During this time he has had opportunity to examine and analyse data collected by investigators engaged in many fields of research. These contacts have impressed him with the need of a text that would present in simple form the fundamentals of statistical analysis including the application of the experimental error concept and the method of variance analysis in such a way as to enable the beginner to follow through the various steps needed for the analysis of his data. The author realizes that there are many excellent texts both general and specific available on the subject. However there does not seem to be any text combining in one volume methods for the measurement of variance correlation curve fitting the probable error concept and the analysis of variance. It is for this purpose that the present volume is prepared and emphasis is placed on the interpretation and application of formulas rather than on their derivation and development. While particular consideration is given to the application of the different methods to agricultural and examples are largely drawn from this field the methods can be applied to any data that can treated satisfactorily. 501 pp. Artikel-Nr. 58138
