Nandita was one of the most beautiful devadasis of Lord Jagannath Temple of Puri, in Orissa. The book depicts the romance set between her and the young English officer, which ultimately ended with the belief of her death. Her death cast a shadow in the Officer s personal life, both in England and in India, till he witnessed his past love in the re-incarnation of a six-year-old girl in the Darjeeling Hills.
