The excavation of Oriyo Timbo marked the beginning of a substantial research partnership between the Gujarat State Department of Archaeology and The University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. The site located in Chiroda Village Gadhada Bhavnagar District of Gujarat State was first visited by archeologists in 1971. This report is a review of the one season of excavation at the site and is complemented by a more detailed study of the animal bones especially an analysis of the annular rings in mammal teeth prepared by Paul Rissman. The problem orientations which took the excavation team to Oriyo have to do with the long term interests in ancient Indian systems of settlement and subsistence. The site as known from the surface sampling of Lustrous Red Ware was particularly attractive since it seems to represent a contrast to the more conventional village farming community frequently excavated within the Indian context. Oriyo seems to have been occupied seasonally and was the home of pastoralists who may have under taken a bit of cultivation. The presence of the microlithic occupation below the Lustrous Red Ware camp was a complete surprise and played no role in the original problem formulation but is one of he major insights to come from the excavation at Oriyo and is justification for the contemplated return to the site for further excavation. This report reviews the findings of the short investigation of this protohistoric settlement. To give the reader a sense of what was accomplished in this short campaign an introduction to the three major findings can be highlighted here 1 the first of these is the investigation of pastoralists camp and the archaeological methodology dealing with the way in which Dr Rissman investigated pastoralism and seasonality at the site 2 the results of the paleobotanical investigation at Oriyo while somewhat overshadowed by later work at Rojdi Weber 1989 is nonetheless significant since Rojdi was not occupied during Lustrous Red Ware times and Oriyo informs us of this time period finally 3 there is the vastly interesting although largely uninvestigated microlithic component top Oriyo on which some speculative thoughts will be offered following a review of the first two research objectives. The time spent at Oriyo while it was very short was a considerable success. It led the team to answer some questions but like all good sciences it also raised new questions and unanticipated intellectual problems and the need for productive work in the future.
