Designed as an introductory text for the undergraduate first-year students of all branches of engineering, the present book covers the basics of civil engineering which is required by the students in the beginning of their four-year engineering studies. This textbook covers four parts of civil engineering: Building materials, Building construction and architecture, Surveying, and Highway engineering. All the chapters are arranged in a logical sequence in order to maintain the continuity of the different parts as per the syllabus. Illustrated numerical examples are solved in the chapter wherever necessary. All the worked out examples have relevance to the theory and equations covered in the Chapters end exercises at the end of each chapter help students to absorb concepts, and thus reinforce the understanding of the subject. In a nutshell, this volume contains the complete contents of the course comprising four sub-branches of civil engineering in a single condensed form.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

BHARGAB MOHAN DAS, M.E. (AIT), Thailand, is the Chief Business Development Officer, Executive Project Coordinator and Chairperson of Green Building Division, Ritta Co., Ltd., Thailand. A specialized structural Engineer, Mr. Das possesses experience of varied nature of projects relevant to Academic Research and Construction all over Asia, Middle East and Parts of Europe. He is also the co-author of three books (all published by PHI Learning).|Mimi Das Saikia, PhD (IIT Guwahati), is an Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering, Royal School of Engineering and Technology, Guwahati, Assam. She has been with the Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Silchar. With a decade of experience in teaching and research she has published many papers in different national and international journals. She is also the coauthor of books Irrigation and Water Power Engineering, Hydrology and Surveying (all published by PHI Learning). Her research interest includes Hydraulics and Open Channel Flow.|MADAN MOHAN DAS, M.S. (Cornell University, USA), Ph.D. (University of Strathclyde, UK) has been Professor, Civil Engineering Department of Assam Engineering College, Guwahati. An Emeritus Fellow of AICTE and Director of Technical Education, Government of Assam and a Telford Premium, 1981 winner jointly with Late Emeritus Professor DIH Barr of University of Strathclyde for one of their research papers by the Council of Institute Civil Engineers (ICE), London, he has more than four decades of teaching experience and three decades of research experience. Dr. Das has authored 7 books (All published by PHI Learning). He has published/presented sixty research papers in national and international journals and conferences. His research interest includes hydrodynamics, free surface flow, irrigation, water power engineering and hydrology and other civil engineering subjects.
