The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms is the collective name of the Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms in the split period of the late Tang Dynasty. In just a few decades, there emerge a total of five dynasties who proclaim themselves Emperors but without the ability to control the overall situation. They involve a territory from Inner Mongolia in north, northern Burma in south, and Gansu in west. During this period, a large number of alien people enter into the Central Plain regions, hence another great national fusion after that in the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Though the chaos caused by the war between the kingdoms and dynasties severely damage the socio-economy, the social production has not been interrupted, especially that the production of handicrafts such as textiles, paper, tea, sun cooking salt have made a lot of progress, and that porcelain manufacturing and woodblock printing industry have made extremely outstanding achievements.
