Migration and urban policies in Sweden have contributed to segregation through counterproductive integration programs. Swedish immigration policy has undergone a shift from a generous policy toward immigrant workers to a more restrictive and selective policy toward refugees and asylum seekers. The current process of segregation (both ethnic and residential) is developing in so-called "sensitive" neighborhoods, particularly in the suburbs of Sweden's three major urban areas. The growth of this phenomenon in Stockholm is linked, among other factors, to the city's urban history, the role of urban morphology, and public space, all of which have contributed to a rise in social unrest and urban violence. After assessing the degree of cultural, economic, and political integration among immigrants, the book examines the links between segregation and the "Swedish integration model," challenging the model's applicability to the European Union. The book draws on numerous interviews, as well as academic and scientific articles, press reports, national statistical data (Statistics Sweden), and field visits.
