Rather than a conventional memoir or a protest manifesto, it is an insider record of academic life seen through the habits of a biologist and ecologist trained to notice early warning signs in stressed systems. The "flame" is not ambition or productivity, but a commitment to care: for students, for basic research, for ethical scholarship, and for the often unseen labour that sustains credible science. Organised into seven chapters, the book uses five guiding questions, who, why, how, when, and where, to connect identity, motivation, practice, institutional change, and the importance of place in shaping scientific work. It examines declining support for basic research, peer review exhaustion, publishing commodification, mentorship as emotional and ecological labour, and the challenge of staying human in transactional environments. It ends as a call for recalibration toward attention, responsibility, and dignity.
