A historical tour is given, contemplating how the roots of mesmerism were interwoven in time since Paracelsus and gave rise to animal magnetism, as well as how it evolved towards a more rational magnetism. Emphasis is placed on the extraordinary phenomena obtained with the states of lucid somnambulism.
