The author explains the persistence of the ethics of feudal Japan into the modern era, with the aim of eludicating the Japanese mind, the group ethos and the martial spirit. This was the first treatise in English on Japanese ethics. It was first published in 1900. It proved to be popular, and this tenth, revised and enlarged edition was published in 1905.
