Evil and its Variations in the Works of Elizabeth Gaskell has been published in 2015 to mark the sesquicentennial of Gaskell's death. This book is a critical anthology of contributions by 32 leading scholars from 16 countries. The authors re-evaluate her works as an integral part of the Victorian literary canon, and address the theme of evil through a multitude of international perspectives. This attractively produced hardback volume is illustrated with numerous historical paintings and sketches by artists such as George du Maurier , Vincent van Gogh, George Frederic Watts and Daniel Maclise. Among the 32 chapters are "Cranford's 'Organic Community' and the Dark Spectre of Time" by Mark Weeks; "Ruth and the Fallen Woman Question in Victorian England" by Andrzej Diniejko; "Deception and Discord in North and South" by Mary Haynes Kuhlman and "The Evils of Drink in Sylvia's Lovers" by Pirjo Koivuvaara.
