Inhaltsangabe

Fall is cider in a cup.
Fall is squirrels stocking up.

Fall is birds up in the sky.
Fall is waving them goodbye.

That's the whole book: one line a page, from back-to-school and wood smoke to muddy boots, street markets, grandpa's stories and trick-or-treat night. About five minutes to read aloud, start to finish. Short enough for a tired evening, good enough that they ask for it again tomorrow.

The season your child is already noticing

They've started pointing at the red tree on the corner. They want to stomp every pile on the sidewalk. They asked where the birds are going. This book meets them right there. A gentle tour of autumn, one picture at a time, with no plot to follow and nothing frightening. Just the season as a small child actually meets it.

Is it right for your child's age?

Written for ages 3 to 7. Three-year-olds sit through it happily, because each page is a single short sentence and the pictures carry the rest. Five- and six-year-olds start reading it themselves. They'll fill in the last word before you get to it, which is how a bedtime story turns into their book, and how early readers build confidence before they can decode every word.

Why it clicks at this age

Every page is something they can go out and find. Kids this age run on recognition. They'll spot the squirrel on the page and then hunt for one in the yard, wave at the geese in the picture and wave at the real ones the next morning. That back-and-forth between the book and the world outside is what makes a seasonal book stick. It's also why this one comes down off the shelf again the following September, when your child is a year older and notices something they missed.

When parents and teachers reach for it

  • Bedtime through September, October and November: calm, warm, and short enough to end the day on time
  • Preschool and kindergarten circle time: a read-aloud for units on seasons, weather, autumn nature and change
  • Early readers practicing out loud: one simple sentence per page, with rhyme and repetition doing the work
  • Before a leaf hunt or nature walk: most families end up outside pointing at things afterward
  • Gifts: first day of school, an autumn birthday, Thanksgiving, or the grandchild whose shelf you never know

The practical details

Ages 3 to 7. 8.5 x 8.5 inches, big enough to share on a lap and light enough for small hands. Paperback and hardcover hold up well as a gift or in a classroom. Also on Kindle, and Kindle Unlimited. Rhyming text by Barbara Pinke, illustrated throughout by Alvin Adhi.

If you want the whole year

Fall is... is part of Rhyme in Time, a set of four with the same format and rhyme scheme: Summer is..., Winter is... and Spring is... There's a four-in-one edition as well, if you'd rather have the whole year in a single book.

Fall is here and fall is there.
Fall is magic everywhere.

That's the last page. The leaves are already turning, so it's worth having on the shelf before they come down.
