These twelve papers form the proceedings of a colloquium held in Basle in 2003 which focused on the languages of ancient Egypt, the Near East, North Africa and the Aegean and the evidence for an Egyptian influence. Arranged geographically, the specialised and often technical contributions search for an Egyptian influence in the languages and speech of Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Africa, Miycenae, Greece and Crete. The papers particularly search for a relationship between Semitic languages and Egyptian and stress the long-term influence of Egypt on the language and writing of neighbouring cultures through to the Ptolemaic era.
