Cities have always been arenas of social and symbolic conflict. As places of encounter between different classes, ethnic groups, and lifestyles, cities play the role of powerful integrators; yet on the other hand urban contexts are the ideal setting for marginalization and violence. The struggle over control of urban spaces is an ambivalent mode of sociation: while producing themselves, groups produce exclusive spaces and then, in turn, use the boundaries they have created to define themselves. This volume presents major urban conflicts and analyzes modes of negotiation against the theoretical background of postcolonialism.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren

Lars Frers lehrt und forscht als Professor für Gesellschaftswissenschaft an der Universitet i Sorost-Norge. Er publiziert zu den Themenfeldern Raum, Materialität und Bewegung mit besonderem Blick auf die Herstellung sozialer Kontrolle und allgemein zu qualitativen Methoden, hier mit Schwerpunkt auf visuelle, multisensorische und mobile Methoden.

Martina Löw ist Professorin für Planungs- und Architektursoziologie am Institut für Soziologie der Technischen Universität Berlin. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Soziologische Theorie, Stadtsoziologie, Raumtheorie und Kultursoziologie. Sie ist Sprecherin des DFG-Sonderforschungsbereiches »Re-Figuration von Räumen« und wirkt als Beraterin in verschiedenen Stadtentwicklungsprojekten mit. Sie hatte Fellowships und Gastprofessuren u.a. in New York (USA), Göteborg (Schweden), Salvador de Bahia (Brasilien), St. Gallen (Schweiz), Paris (Frankreich) und Wien (Österreich) und ist als Mitglied des Steering Committee der Berlin University Alliance verantwortlich für das Forschungsförderprogramm »Social Cohesion«. Von 2011 bis 2013 war sie Vorsitzende der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie.

Lars Meier ist Professor für Soziologie mit dem Schwerpunkt SozialeUngleichheit an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.

Silke Steets (Prof. Dr. phil.), geb. 1973, ist Professorin für Soziologische Theorie an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg und Projektleiterin im Sonderforschungsbereich 1265 »Refiguration von Räumen«. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Stadtsoziologie, Raum- und Architektursoziologie, Religionssoziologie und qualitative Forschungsmethoden.

Sergej Stoetzer, educationalist, was a research fellow at the Institute for Sociology, Darmstadt University of Technology. He worked at the Institute for Higher Education Research Wittenberg and studied in Halle and Berlin. His research areas are sociology of space/place, perception of (urban) space, surveillance and society, and visual methods.
