The first concerns Muslim and Christian European theological approaches to the practice of Muslim and Christian cohabitation and cooperation in Europe. The aim is to keep track of these approaches regardless of current political developments. For centuries the two groups' thinking about each other took place separately and within the confines of two religious Systems which were held to be antagonistic. The second theme concerns the various orientations of current self-understanding among Turkish Muslims and their perceptions of Europe as an entity to be aspired to, to be refused, or to be communicated with. There exists a rich gamut of ideological orientations in Turkey and among Turks nowadays, both on an official and an unofficial level, and they deserve to be better known in Europe. This holds especially true for those orientations which lead to particular views of Europe. The third part of the book concerns the conditions of Muslims within the European Diaspora. This holds particularly true for Turkish migrants, some of whom have organized themselves but the majority of whom do not adhere to any organization. Existing studies tend to stress the distinetive features of these organizations, the ways in which they differ from each other. It is also legitimate, however, to look for the common cultural and social features of immigrant groups from the same country of origin and to interpret differences as different options they follow to Orient themselves in Europe.
