This volume derives from the lectures presented at the International Symposium on "The Sentinel Lymph Node Concept in Oncology" held in Berlin in December 2000. The first part is concerned with the fundamentals of lymphogenous metastasis, identification and localization of sentinel lymph nodes as well as dosimetry and radiation protection. The second part presents the clinical experience gained in applying the sentinel lymph node concept to primary tumors having the potential to metastasize preferably via their draining lymphatic vessels. The discussions following each presentation are included in the form of summaries of the main issues addressed.
