This book is intented for all working in the field of tattoo and permanent make-up (PMU). The tattoo and permanent make-up world is a complex industry with people coming from very different backgrounds. This book is written taking this into account. The book gives insight into the amount of ink in a large tattoo and hence under the skin and also discusses the problems with nickel in tattoo and PMU inks. The amount of nickel in the skin is calculated from experiments conducted in the laboratory of the author (CTL).
Methods used across Europe are not identical and not clearly defined. There is a lot of room for interpretation by authorities. There are resolutions from the Council of Europe giving guiding information, but these are not legally binding in the EU. They are also not complete. Several substances to be banned, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are not clearly defined and no analytical methods are even suggested. There are approx. 10.000 compounds in this group of PAHs and it cannot be the intention of such resolutions to ban all of these and request such extensive and expensive analysis. Too much is missing in the resolutions for them to have been converted into national laws. All of this leads to arbitrary decisions by authorities which have cost the industry millions of Euros. The German "Tätowiermittelverordnung" is also discussed in detail helping those who want to sell on the German market.
Furthermore, there is an introduction to the different pigments in use, their chemical classes and differences. Azo pigments are discussed in detail as they can be broken down into dangerous amines. This is also an environmental problem. Problems with metals in various inks and/or pigments are also described, giving details of their origin in inks.
The European Society of Tattoo and Pigment Research (ESTP) is introduced, the only one of its kind in Europe.
The book includes the tables from the two CoE resolutions, different methods used for the analysis of metals in tattoo and PMU inks.
The do-it-yourself (DIY) tattoo kits available on the internet have been tested. Results included in the book. They can be purchased by anyone with a bank account, therefore, there is no real age restriction. Authorities have no possibility of stopping their import - a very dangerous and frightening development. The thought of youngsters tattooing each other without any true knowledge of the business should be of great concern to all parents.
