The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative impact of family educational background and parental attitudes in the academic achievement of students in the field of Physical Science classroom. This study compares the 8th grade students' achievement in the physical science class with the parents' level of education. Researchers across the world have reported that there is a considerable influence from the family background in the participation and achievement of the students in physical science. The effect of school or teacher quality in academic achievement is less that the effect of the family background in the students' success.

Fresia Agudelo is chemist from Antioquia University. Aftergraduation she earned a Master's degree in Education, and at dateshe is a doctoral student of the Higher Education Leadershipprogram. She also teaches Chemistry and Physics.
