Liberalism as a cross-party movement and a broad way of thinking has fallen into the defensive and is often associated with market radicalism, social coldness, and ecological ignorance. The contributors show that liberalism as a school of thought is not dead. In their essays, they present ideas and approaches for new liberal concepts to cope with the great challenges of our time: from climate change, globalization, and the digital revolution to transnational migration and the increasing systemic competition between democracies and authoritarian regimes.

Ralf Fücks is founder and managing director of the Center for Liberal Modernity in Berlin, a thinktank and platform for the discourse on renewing liberal democracy. Formerly he has been chairman of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung for 21 years. Fücks publishes frequently on questions of sustainable development, political strategy, and international relations in national as well as international media. Rainald Manthe, born in 1987, is a sociologist, author and works as head of the program »Liberal Democracy« at the think tank Center for Liberal Modernity. For his PhD, he did research on the transnational meetings of social movements. He writes regularly on questions of democracy development.
