Si l'on peut faire des distinctions entre maison et foyer, il reste qu'à travers l'idée primale d'abri, la vie et la mort s'entremêlent dans l'architecture de tout logement, qu'il soit caverne ou château. La maison peut révéler le degré de civilisation, de richesse, voir même d'intelligence. Elle est un baromètre de l'existence. Selon son architecte ou son client, elle peut se placer à l'avant-garde de la création architecturale, écartant les notions issues du passé à la recherche d'un nouveau paradigme. Elle peut accepter les règles de l'urbanisme, quitte à les inverser. Elle peut flotter en suspension ou émerger des profondeurs de la terre. Alors que les considérations financières limitent l'architecture publique à des méthodes éprouvées, certaines maisons rompent avec toutes les règles et contribuent à faire avancer l'art de bâtir. Ce livre ne parle pas de décoration et n'est pas davantage un guide pratique pour construire sa propre maison. Il est plutôt une recherche qui entraîne le lecteur de la Patagonie en Argentine jusqu'aux falaises de Dover Heights en Australie pour visiter quelques-unes des plus remarquables maisons construites au cours de ces cinq dernières années.
Biografía del autor
Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard University, and was editor-in-chief of the leading French art journal Connaissance des Arts for over two decades. He has published numerous articles and books on contemporary architecture, including TASCHEN's Architecture Now! series, Building a New Millennium, and monographs Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, and Alvaro Siza.
