In January 1842 Charles Dickens set sail from Liverpool for Boston with his wife Catherine and her maid, and on the American shores of the Atlantic received the kind of jubilant reception the movie stars of a latter age might dream of. Crowds lined the streets, dinners and balls and receptions were on the daily agenda, and, from Longfellow to the president, Dickens met every person of distinction in the nation. The book he wrote about the US on his return, however gave a rather different impression. Quiet in tone, with little to say of his public persona, Dickens' narrative concentrated on his impressions of American life - particularly those aspects of social welfare which he took a reformer's interest in, such as the prison system or care for people with disabilities - and concluded with a stinging condemnation of slavery in the United States.
