International cooperation becomes a keyword in higher education. In the past, cooperation between scholars from the North and the South, both in teaching and research, was predominantly characterized by dependent relationships. Looking at recent experiences from the European and African perspective, the authors of this book analyze the conditions for and recent efforts in academic cooperation between Europe and Africa and draw some lessons for an improved partnership in this cooperation.

Eike W. Schamp is retired Professor in Economic Geography at the Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main. His research interests focus on knowledge and regional economic development in general, currently on the role of African universities therein.
Stefan Schmid, Dr., is Coordinator of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Africa (ZIAF) at Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main. He has organised various international conferences, summer schools and exhibitions covering multiple disciplines in Germany and in Africa.
