Withhin the last two decades the maritime world has seen a massive change in technology on board ships. The new hightech equipment being installed in order to facilitate work and life still quite often fails to satisfy the needs of the human being operating the system. This is mainly due to poor design of the manmachine interface.ISHOB ´95/ the international Symposium on Human Factors On Board, was therefore held on November 15-17, 1995 under the patronage of Dr. Matthias Wissmann, the German Federal Minister of Transport, to emphasize the importance of ergonomic design of ship systems.Numerous experts of international standing, with a background from all kinds of different traffic systems, delivered very valuable contributions in order to examine "The influence of the Man-Machine Interface on Safety of Navigation". In particular they highlighted the stateoftheart technologies as well as visions of future ergonomic concepts, heeded the influence of stress and strain resulting from work at existing systems on the performance of the human being, discussed necessary changes in the methods of education and training of seafarers in order to meet their needs and debated all questions concerning adoption and enforcement of new normative systems.
