This book presents six case studies of student learners "thinking aloud" as they translated a German text into English and wrote an English essay under examination conditions. The analysis of these case studies calls into question orthodox views of whether the essay is a fairer test of advanced language competance than translation and shows under which conditions foreign language does occur.In addition, it isolates a number of success factors in text production, which are relevant for the design of teaching materials for writing in a foreign language.
