Santiago Calatrava est né en 1951 non loin de Valence en Espagne où il fit ses études ainsi qu'à l'ETH de Zurich. Il est aujourd'hui l'une des personnalités les plus exceptionnelles de l'architecture et de l'ingénierie contemporaines. Devenu célèbre grâce à ses ponts et ses tours, il existe une relation indéniable entre ses constructions, ses dessins du corps humain et ses sculptures aux formes géométriques inspirées du dynamisme du mouvement et de la tension. Récemment, l'aspect spectaculaire de ses gares de Zurich et de Lyon a de nouveau attiré l'attention sur lui. D'autres projets de ce genre sont en cours de réalisation à Liège et à Lisbonne. Son travail se situe entre l'art, l'architecture et l'ingénierie ; Calatrava s'avère ainsi l'une des figures les plus importantes d'une nouvelle génération qui déterminera à l'avenir l'architecture moderne. Ses projets actuels aux États-Unis et en Europe sont censés changer entièrement notre perception accoutumée de l'architecture contemporaine.
