Since the recommendations issued by the WHO Study Group, the use of continuous cell lines (CCLs) to produce new therapeutic and preventive agents has continued to grow. However, it is clear that a number of issues remain to be resolved. The workshop recorded in this volume focuses on unresolved issues which relate to cell standardization, potential contaminants and product characteristics. It represents an important event in the development of regulatory policies relevant to the control of CCLs and their use as substrates for human biologicals.
