The art of Africa displays an astonishing variety of styles, techniques and materials. Whether fashioned in gold, bronze, terracotta or iron, carved in wood or woven in silk, the masterpieces presented in this volume are a testament to consummate technical mastery. Each piece is presented in a double-page spread with commentary. The volume reflects the enormous diversity of African art from culture to culture. Included here are works by the Fang, Congo and Cuba peoples of Central Africa, Ethiopian shields, burial posts of Eastern Africa, bead works of Southern Africa, items of equipment carried by Nomadic peoples such as the Massai, rock paintings of the San, objects created by the peoples at the southern edge of the Sahara, such as the Tellem and Dogon, as well as works produced by the northern cultures of the Tuareg and the Berbers. Egyptian art will be treated in a separate volume in the "World Art" series. The volume's historical coverage is equally extensive. Nigerian art, for example, is shown from its earliest highpoints with the Nok culture (6th century BCE) through Ife and the art of the Kingdom of Benin right up to the modern day Yoruba.

Zustand: Gut. 127 S. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Africa is one of the most important art regions in the world. Rock art in the Sahara is older than the earliest Egyptian dynasties. The "lost" Nok and Sokoto cultures in present-day Nigeria in the first millennium BC mark the spectacular start of African antiquity. Later high points in the same region include the kingdoms of Igbo-Ukwu, Ife, and Benin (in the 16th century). Around the same time, the town of Djenne at the inland delta of the Niger River and the Tellem/Dogon region in Mali experienced a zenith of their artistic culture. The time frame of the selected fifty masterpieces presented here covers more than 2,500 years including early archaeological findings, via the great cultures of the African middle ages, to the traditional art of the 20th century. African artists were masters of their materials, whether casting in bronze, shaping terracotta, working iron, carving wood or weaving cotton. Precious textiles, basketry, bead objects and carved ivory are included in this volume as well as high- status ancestral figures and cult statues. Following a general essay, this book consists of four chapters, each beginning with a brief introduction to the area concerned: Central, East and southern Africa, West Africa, and Mediterranean North Africa. (Egypt is the subject of a separate volume in this World Art series.) Each of the "icons" chosen is accompanied by a description of its notable artistic and iconographic features. The result is an informative survey of African art, shown through a selection of its outstanding achievements. ISBN 9783791325804 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1062 Mit zahlr. farb. Abb.
