Edition in three languages: English, French, German - The multi-use building discussed in this book is an idea, a concept rather than a narrowly definide building form. It includes all buildings that harbour more than one of the three main functions of human life. Not only should the multi-use building integrate these internal functions, but it should relate them to a greater, external urban context. Therefore a relatively small building that acts as a link in an urban space and a large complex that is almost a city district in itself can both be multi-use structures. The concept of multi-use is full of unexplored complexities, at least partly because modern architectural theories had denied it to us. The book is written in this spirit: to examine what is there and to see how we can achieve a better environment through the integration of the multi-use building in the urban fabric.
