Raphael (1483 – 1520) was one of the protagonists of the Italian Renaissance. His Vatican frescos and, above all, his paintings of the Virgin Mary defined entire epochs of European art history, not only as an inspiration but also as undisputed ideals. The collection of drawings by Raphael in the Städel Museum is unique in Germany.
