Dayanita Singh is the winner of the 2022 Hasselblad Award.
With this book, the internationally celebrated artist Dayanita Singh returns to her artistic beginnings. In the catalogue for the first comprehensive retrospective, the first stop of which is hosted by the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, Singh presents early works from her 1980-1986 oeuvre. From hundreds of slides and contact prints, the artist made a selection of personal and powerful black-and-white photographs. As a rediscovery and look into her own past, the theme of the "archive", central to Singh's work, takes on a central dimension here. The media of photography, installation and book intertwine in Singh's work in a unique way, which is why this book also features recent photographs from the exhibition.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
DAYANITA SINGH (*1961) gehört zu den wichtigsten Künstlerinnen der Gegenwart. Einzelausstellungen u.a. im MMK, Frankfurt; Hayward Gallery, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, und Art Institute of Chicago. 2013 bespielte Singh den deutschen Pavillon auf der 55. Venedig-Biennale.

Just as each image within Singh's body of work has connections to other works, other ideas, other thoughts, other people and times, so every thought of mine opens up a plethora of associations. Her oeuvre makes me look sideways, upwards, downwards, backwards and forwards, but never for long in just one direction. At the same time, our extended dialogue makes it possible to create a patchwork of ideas, thoughts, perspectives, themes and approaches; to circle around, find points of connection and then circle back around. This text, therefore, does not have to be read from beginning to end. You can start wherever you would like to, end where you would like to and then circle back around.
