Inhaltsangabe

StudioMDA is a multidisciplinary architecture and design practice based in New York, with extensive expertise in cultural buildings, art galleries, exhibitions, and art fair booths, alongside work in commercial, institutional, and residential sectors. Over the past two decades, the firm has played a pivotal role in shaping New York City’s art districts, completing more than 40 gallery projects and establishing itself as a leading authority in the design of cultural spaces.

This publication examines the evolving relationship between art and architecture across multiple scales. Structured in three main chapters―galleries, exhibitions, and art fair booths―it presents a selection of projects of the firm’s work. The largest section, dedicated to galleries, features key projects such as the Phillips Auction House Headquarters, Marian Goodman Gallery, and Kasmin Gallery. The exhibition chapter highlights collaborations with artists such as Sarah Morris, Lee Bae, Jorinde Voigt, and Tomokazu Matsuyama. The book concludes with a curated selection from StudioMDA’s more than 300 art fair booths, designed for galleries at leading international fairs including Art Basel, TEFAF, and Frieze.

Accompanied by conversations with gallerists, artists, curators, and art-world figures, the book examines the interplay between space and scale, revealing both parallels and distinctions in how architecture and art are conceived, presented, and experienced―from initial concept to final realization. Drawing on firsthand experiences of commissioning and working within StudioMDA spaces―or within the art world more broadly―it offers rare insight into the spaces, practices, and ambitions that shape them.
