In his sculptures and drawings, Thomas Lerooy (*1981 in Roeselare) conjures up a fantastical world that takes spectators to the intimate frontiers of humanity, probing the dark areas and the flaws that define man’s mental and physical limits. Each work evokes metaphysical questions as the artist offers his richly ironic explorations of themes such as creation, duality, captivity, transitoriness, and sexuality. Lerooy’s drawings celebrate an aesthetic tradition reaching back to Leonardo da Vinci, but also recall the vanitas paintings of the seventeenth century melded with the grotesque and macabre humor of James Ensor. In his sculptures, the artist reveals his great fascination for the monumental tradition of sculpture and the meaning of “the aura” around art. Style and technique are handled in a perfectionist and mannerist way with an eye for detail and proportion.

De Stad Brussel koopt een werk aan van beeldhouwer Thomas Lerooy. Het beeld werd gekozen tijdens de kunstexpo Art in the City, die op 25 en 26 april 2009 plaatsvond in het Egmontpark. Het werk van Lerooy krijgt binnenkort een plaats in de Brusselse Vijfhoek.
De kunstenaar gaf zijn werk de naam 'Not enough brain to survive'. Letterlijk vertaald is dat 'Niet genoeg hersenen om te overleven'. 14 beeldhouwwerken deden mee aan de wedstrijd Art in the City. De Belg Thomas Lerooy won de competitie die volgens duidelijke criteria verliep. Het gekozen werk moest vernieuwend en creatief zijn, maar ook samengaan met de plaats waar het komt te staan. Bovendien speelde ook het materiaal een rol. Dat moest duurzaam en stevig zijn, en bestand zijn tegen vandalisme. Het laatste criterium was de kostprijs.
Het werk krijgt binnenkort een plaats in de Brusselse Vijfhoek. De juiste plaats is nog niet bepaald.
