The paintings by Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), one of the

twentieth-century art, and is the author of standard publications on German
Expressionism. In 1991 she was awarded the National Art Book Prize for her
publication 'German Expressionism, Primitivism and

Vincent van Gogh en het Expressionisme toont voor het eerst op grote schaal de belangrijke invloed van Vincent van Gogh op de Duitse en Oostenrijkse Expressionisten. Met name tussen Van Goghs overlijden en het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in 1914 werden zijn schilderijen symbool voor de 'internationale' en 'moderne' kunst. In die periode was Van Gogh nergens ter wereld populairder dan in Duitsland, zijn werk werd er al vroeg aangekocht door privé-verzamelaars en museumdirecteuren.

De expressionisten zagen in Van Goghs werk een vitale kracht in de pure, felle kleuren en een confronterende directheid, die zij als basis namen voor hun eigen nieuwe kunst. Duitse kunstenaars als Ernst Ludwig Kirchner en Wassily Kandinsky waren vooral getroffen door Van Goghs techniek, een heftige toets gecombineerd met schrille kleurcontrasten. De Oostenrijkse Richard Gerstl en Oskar Kokoschka waren meer beïnvloed door Van Goghs emotionele aanpak in bijvoorbeeld zijn psychologische portretten. In de tentoonstelling zijn van beide categorieën fraaie voorbeelden opgenomen.

De tentoongestelde schilderijen, circa 20 van Van Gogh en 40 van de Expressionisten, komen voornamelijk uit de collecties van het Van Gogh Museum en de New Yorkse Neue Galerie. Ze worden aangevuld met sleutelwerken uit andere publieke en particuliere verzamelingen.
