The monumental work catalogue of Paul Klee in nine volumes presenting 9,800 works in chronological order was published between 1998 and 2003, based on the structure of Klee’s own ordering system. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He taught at Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, since 1931 also at the prestigious art academy in Dusseldorf. After the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship he moved to Switzerland where he lived until his death in 1940.The artist and the publisher Hans Meyer-Benteli became acquainted during these years. When Paul Klee died he still did not have the Swiss citizenship which would have meant that according to the agreement Switzerland joined about the liquidation of German property abroad his artistic inheritance would be lost. In order to avoid this the publisher together with three partners bought everything that was in Switzerland and donated it to a newly found Paul Klee Foundation.
