This book presents the third option for the elderly, disabled, and deconditioned person hospitalized, becoming too weak to breathe and cough, and offered only a (tracheostomy) tube through the neck, or oxygen and morphine for an oblivious death. The third option, that is rarely if ever offered in the United States, is assisting breathing and coughing by providing deeper breath volumes via a simple mouthpiece or nasal interface. Although not "rocket science," physicians do not offer full noninvasive ventilatory support alternatives to invasive airway tubes and invasive respiratory support.
