MP3 blogs and their aggregators, which have risen toprominence over the past four years, are presentingan alternative way of promoting and discovering newmusic. This book argues that MP3 files greatlyaffect MP3 blogs in terms of shaping them as: agenre separate from general weblogs and music blogswithout MP3s, especially due to the impact of MP3blog aggregators such as The Hype Machine andElbows; a particular form of rhetoric illuminated byKenneth Burke's dramatistic ratios; and apotentially subversive subculture, which like othersubcultures, exists in a symbiotic relationship withthe traditional media it defines itself against.Using excerpts from multiple MP3 blogs and theirforums, interviews with MP3 bloggers and AnthonyVolodkin (creator of The Hype Machine), referencesto MP3 blogs in traditional press, and dramatism andsocial semiotic theory, this book demonstrates thatthe MP3 file is not only changing the way music isconsumed and circulated, but also the way music ispromoted and discussed. This is a valuable academictext about the social implications of an emergingmedium that has not yet been explored in theacademic arena.
