This book looks at what kinds of effects music haveon the performance of a second language readingcomprehension task in Taiwanese college students. Anexperiment involving 123 participants from a mediumsize college in southern Taiwan was conductedwhere the participants performed a readingcomprehension task with either classical music, hiphop music, or with no music in the background. Theresults of the study indicated that the readingcomprehension score for the control group wassignificantly different than the readingcomprehension score for the hip hop music group. This showed that playing hip hop music in thebackground has a greater effect on the performanceof a reading comprehension test as compared toclassical music or with no music. This was inaccordance with the original hypothesis and with theidea that music that is perceived distractive willhave a greater effect on task performance andconcentration.
