Understanding forces in the context of biology isessential as all cells in the humanbody are constantly subjected to mechanical forcesand are often presented with situations whereadaptations are critical for survival. Mechanicaladaptations in response to forces have been studiedmainly though visualization of changes incytoskeletal structures and understanding thecorresponding signaling pathways. Theseobservations are informative in elucidatingregulating proteins and cellular phenotype, but donot offer insights to the effects, or cellmechanics, of these cellular changes andregulations. A few important questions remain: 1)what are the corresponding mechanical changes, 2)how do these mechanical changes help the cell adapt,3) is it possible these adaptations result inunforeseen consequences, and 4) if so, do theyresult in disease? Due to technical limitations, only a portion of the answers have been explored todate. In an attempt to answer these questions, wepresent studies that use novel insights to quantifychanges in cell and nuclear mechanics and reveal thepotential impact forces play in cancer and aging.
