Since the HIV epidemic of the 1990s, researchershave attempted to develop a red blood cell analog.Even though some of these substitutes are now inPhase III of clinical trials, their use is limitedby side effects and short half-life in the humanbody. As a result, there is still a need for aneffective erythrocyte analog with minimumimmunogenic and side effects, so that it can be usedfor multiple applications. Finding new approachesto develop more efficient blood substitutes will notonly bring valuable advances in the clinicalapproach, but also in the area of in vitro testingof medical devices. This work examined the feasibility of creating adeformable multi-functional, biodegradable, biocompatible particle for applications in drugdelivery and device testing. As a preliminaryevaluation, different types of microcapsules weresynthesized using natural and synthetic polymers, various cross-linking agents, and diversemanufacturing techniques. After fullycharacterizing of each system, the most promisingred blood cell analog in terms of deformability, stability and toxicity was determined.
