The human pelvis frequently sustains injury or bonefractures due to automobile accidents, presence ofbone metastases and osteoporosis. In recent decades,finite element (FE) method has been used a powerfultool in study of pelvic biomechanics. Previous FEmodels of the pelvis contain only bony structure, thearticular joints like pubic symphysis, however, areoften simplified or not modeled. Accuraterepresentation of pelvic biomechanics necessitatesuse of biofidelic pelvis models. This book introducesmethods to develop and validate advanced pelvicmodels from medical image data containing both boneand soft tissues. The FE models are then used tostudy deformation characteristics of the pubicsymphysis, pelvic bone stresses, and injurymechanisms under side impacts; and to investigate howthe presence of periacetabular defects and subsequentcement filling affect pelvic bone stresses and hipcontact pressure in single stance loads. Themethodologies used in this book may help biomechanicsresearcher and automobile safety engineer indevelopment of advanced human body model to betterunderstand the injury mechanism and tolerances undervarious loading conditions.
