The Bliss Bibliographic Classification Association is an association of users and supporters of the Bibliographic Classification. The association promotes the development and use of classification, publishes official amendments, enables users to keep in touch and exchange experience, and gives them a say in the future of the scheme. It is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1969, with members all over the world. Each of the following schedules is the result of a rigorous and detailed analysis of the terminology of the field in question, using the techniques of facet analysis.

Bliss Bibliographie Classification (BC2) is an internationally recognized detailed general classific-ation scheme which is based on clear and comprehensive principles for both the overall strueture and the internal organization of individual subjeet classes. The latter is based on the theory of faceted classification developed by Ranganathan and elaborated by the UK Classification Research Group. The new class C is the result of a rigorous and detailed analysis of the vocabulary of chemistry, using the techniques of facet analysis. It is a radical revision and expansion of Class C in the first edition of the Bibliographie Classification. The schedule, like that of all the classes of BC2, is designed to perform several major funetions: firstly, it serves as a practical tool in the management of chemical documentation and information, both as an indexing and organizing system; BC2 also provides a model for other faceted subjeet tools, together with a Statement of established principles and methodologies, particularly when dealing with more complex aspects of subjeet representation; finally, this schedule acts as a highly struetured and detailed map of the coneepts in the field of chemistry, and a substantial termino-logical resource, which may be used as the basis for the construetion of thesauri or other search aids.
