Economic globalization has intensified since the 1980s and created faster channels of international interdependence and an accelerating technology race. In this new asymmetric world economy the EU is facing a dynamic and flexible US system which takes advantage of the global quest for foreign direct investment. Innovation policies in the EU - in particular in Germany - are found to be rather inadequate. There are also new theoretical challenges where a "structural macro model" and a Schumpetrian model of innovation and full employment are presented as new approaches. Besides theoretical challenges the increasing global dynamics raise new problems of international policy coordination which could lead to unsustainable economic globalization.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren

Prof. Dr. Paul J.J. Welfens ist Präsident des Europäischen Instituts für Internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen (EIIW)/Universität Wuppertal, dort zudem Inhaber des Jean Monnet-Lehrstuhls für Europäische Wirtschaftsintegration und des Lehrstuhls Makroökonomik. Außerdem ist er Vorsitzender des Instituts des Bundesverbands Deutscher Volks- und Betriebswirte, Düsseldorf, Non-resident Senior Research Fellow am AICGS/Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC sowie IZA Research Fellow, Bonn; 2007/08 war er Alfred Grosser Professor am Sciences Po, Paris.

Paul J. J. Welfens, geb. 1957 in Düren, Studium der Volkswirtschaftslehre in Wuppertal, Duisburg und Paris, Promotion 1985, Habilitation1989. Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Volkswirtschaftslehre - Schwerpunkt Makroökonomische Theorie und Politik an der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal; Präsident des Europäischen Instituts für Internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen (EIIW); Jean-Monnet-Professor für Europäische Wirtschaftsintegration; zuvor Distinguished Research Fellow am AICGS/The Johns Hopkins University, Professor an der Universität Münster bzw. Potsdam, Visiting Alfred Grosser Professor Sciences Po, Paris.
