Inhaltsangabe

The present volume sets forth the basic principles and the dinical practice of andrology as the science of male reproductive health and dysfunction. This book is to be viewed against the background of the development of reproductive medicine and andrology at our center in Münster, Germany. Follow ing the establishment of the Clinical Research Group for Reproductive Medicine by the Max Planck Society in 1980, which was succeeded by the Institute of Reproductive Medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1989, a center of andrological research and patient care developed, based on dose cooperation between basic scientists and physicians. This dose co opera tion between basic research and dinical practice aims to apply scientific methods to explore the reproductive functions of the male and to harness them for mankind, both in positive and negative terms. The combination of research and patient care necessitates dose contact between university dinics and insti tutes, in particular, the Women's Hospital, Department of Urology, Institute of Human Genetics, Institute for Clinicial Radiology, Institute for Medical Micro biology, and Institute for Medical Psychology. In addition, the Institute of Reproductive Medicine participates in the network of the WHO Collaborating Centers (since 1987) and the Training Centers for Clinical Andrology of the European Academy of Andrology (since 1994). Over the course of time we have accumulated experience in patient care and have developed dinical principles which have been published in numerous artides, reviews, and book chapters.

This book contains both the scientific basis, including molecular biology and molecular genetics, and the clinical practice of andrology by dealing with diagnosis and treatment of individual disorders classified according to the localisation of the cause. Management of the infertile couple and gynaecology relevant to andrology are described. Modern techniques of assisted fertilisation including IVF and ICSI are part of the book. Psychological factors of infertility are discussed. One of the chapters is devoted to endocrinology and reproductive functions of aging men. Male contraception, e.g.vasectomy and approaches to hormonal male contraception, are included, and legal and ethical aspects of andrology conclude the book. This text as a whole follows the principles of evidence-based medicine whose diagnostic and therapeutic decisions are based on science and controlled clinical studies. It is the result of a joint effort of either past or present coworkers at the school of rational andrology in Münster, and this guarantees a uniform and coherent outline of the interdisciplinary field of andrology.
