Functional Insulin Treatment (FIT) is the most effective method of treatment for type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes. With either an insulin pump or with multiple daily injections, diabetic patients trained in FIT are now able to take their insulin on the basis of actual function, with the aim of achieving near-normoglycaemia and the freedom to eat when, what and how much they want. Previous diabetes education programmes have adapted the patient's lifestyle to the conditions of the therapy, whereas the goal of FIT is to adapt therapy to the lifestyle of the patient. This book defines the principles of FIT and describes the contents, media and techniques of a practical programme for training patients to carry it out such that they achieve the twin goals of excellent metabolic control and a flexible lifestyle. This monograph on diabetology is intended for clinicians, practitioners, nurses and dieticians.
