The study reported in this paper is an ongoing effort. We reported a preliminary analysis of the data in the paper. The current experiments varied the subjects to c- duct online group learning activities by the communication media such as email and threaded discussion. Although, we could have easily learned the impact of mobile devices in learning if we divided the subjects to use different hardware such as p- sonal computers, personal digital assistant, or mobile phones, we believe our findings will still be able to provide useful insights on the difficulties that the mobile learners will face in solving problems as a group. Our analysis result will also provide ba- line information on whether the traits of the successful or failed online groups are applicable to the mobile learners. For example, we expect the SMS will be a better medium to overcome the major problem of instant communication or the rapid propagation of the information as the mobile phones have built-in mechanism to remind the users of the incoming new messages and also the mobile phone users are expected to be interrupted for the incoming messages. However, we need further investigation of other problems, which hinder the optimum online group work. For example, ‘accuracy of the transferred information’ was identified as one of the pr- lems of using emails as the communication medium. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or SMS are more apt to deliver shorter messages than the typical emails.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Vipul Kashyap, PhD is a Senior Medical Informatician in the Clinical Informatics Research & Development group at Partners HealthCare System. He plays the role of a systems and information architect in the content of a platform for Clinical Knowledge Management Platform and creating of clinical information models in the context of the Enterprise Clinical Services architecture at Partners Healthcare System. Vipul has received his PhD from the Department of Computer Science at Rutgers University in New Brunswick that investigated the use of metadata and ontologies for information and knowledge management. He was a co-project manager of a Knowledge Management effort at Telcordia Technologies (formerly known as Bellcore) focused on knowledge sharing and reuse across Telcordia's Professional Services Units. He was a fellow at the National Library of Medicine, and has held positions at Micro-electronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Vipul has published 2 books on the topic of Semantics in Information Brokering and Integration, 40-50 articles in prestigious conferences and journals. He serves on the editorial boards of 3 journals and sits on the technical advisory board of an early stage companies developing semantics-based products. He also represents Partners on the W3C Advisory Committee and the EHR Technical Committee of the HealthCare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP).Christoph Bussler is Staff Software Engineer at BEA Systems, Inc., working in the core WebLogic application server product development organization. Before joining BEA, Chris was architect at Cisco Systems, Inc. in San Jose, CA, USA, responsible for the service-oriented architecture at Cisco Systems' Quote-to-Cash business unit. Before taking this position he was Science Foundation Ireland Professor at the National University of Ireland, Galway in Ireland and Executive Director of the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI). In addition to his role as Executive Director of DERI, Chris led the Semantic Web Services research group at DERI. Chris has a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Erlangen, Germany and a Master in computer science from the Technical University of Munich, Germany. Chris published a book titled 'B2B Integration', two books on workflow management, over 100 research papers in journals and academic conferences, gave tutorials on several topics including B2B integration, workflow management and service-oriented architectures and was keynote speaker at many conferences and workshops on topics like workflow management, B2B and EAI integration as well as Semantic Web.Matthew Moran is a Senior Design Engineer with the SOA R&D group at Nortel Networks (Ireland) Ltd. working on their Multimedia Contact Center product. Prior to that, he was a Research Engineer with the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG)., where he was co-founder and architect of the WSMX open source Semantic Web Service execution environment. Previously, Matthew gained extensive industrial experience as a software engineer over ten years in Ireland, Germany and Australia. He worked with MediaOne in Dublin, Ireland and Rumble Group in Sydney Australia as a Web design engineer focusing on the early integration of Web service technology into Web applications.  Matthew is completing his PhD in Semantic Web Services with NUIG and has a Bachelor of Electronic Engineering Degree from the same university. He is co-author of thirteen research papers in academic journals and conferences as well as three book chapters on topics relating to Semantic Web Services. He is co-architect of the WSMX open source Semantic Web Service execution environment and is co-author of the OASIS Semantic Execution Environment working group. In addition, he has co-authored and presented tutorials at eightinternational conferences. Oliver Raabe: Studium der Rechts- und Staatswissenschaften an der Universität Kiel mit erstem juristischem Staatsexamen. Juristischer Vorbereitungsdienst und zweites juristisches Staatsexamen in Hamburg. Hernach Dissertation zum technischen Umweltschutzrecht an der Universität Kiel. Seit dem Jahr 2001 zunächst Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und später Forschungsgruppenleiter mit Forschungsschwerpunkten an der Schnittstelle von IKT und Recht (Energieinformationsrecht und Rechtsinformatik) am Institut für Informations- und Wirtschaftsrecht (IIWR) im Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). Daniel Oberle: Nach abgeschlossenen Diploma der Informatik an der Fachhochschule sowie der Universität Karlsruhe, erhielt er seinen Dr. rer. pol. Grad von der Universität Karlsruhe am Institut für Angewandte Informatik und Formale Beschreibungsverfahren (AIFB), Forschungsgruppe Prof. Studer. Die Promotion diskutiert die Anwendung von Semantic Web Technologien in etablierten Middleware Lösungen und wurde beim Springer Verlag veröffentlicht. Daniel Oberle hat über 50 wissenschaftliche Publikation verfasst im Bereich Semantic Web und Ontologien. Seit 2006 arbeitet er als Senior Researcher im SAP Research Center Karlsruhe.Christian Funk: Studium der Rechtswissenschaften in Dresden mit ersten Juristischen Staatsexamen 2002. Anschließend als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter bei LutherMenold (heute Luther) und Quack, Gutterer & Partner in Dresden tätig. 2003-2005 juristischer Vorbereitungsdienst in Karlsruhe und Windhoek, Namibia. 2005-2009 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Informations- und Wirtschaftsrecht (IIWR) im Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). Promotion an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg mit einer Dissertation zu Fragen des Informationsrechts und der Rechtsinformatik. Seit 2009 als Richter auf Probe in der sächsischen Justiz tätig.RichardWacker beendete Ende des Jahres 2006 sein Studium an der Universität Karlsruhe als Diplom-Informationswirt. Anschließend nahm er mit dem Ziel der Promotion im Bereich Rechtsinformatik die Tätigkeit bei der Forschungsgruppe Energieinformationsrecht und Rechtsinformatik am Institut für Informations- und Wirtschaftsrecht auf. Er beschäftigte sich zunächst im Rahmen des Projektes SESAM und später des Projektes THESEUS/TEXO mit Fragen zur "Formalisierung des Rechts". Hierbei lag der rechtliche Schwerpunkt im Datenschutzrecht. Der informatikbezogene Fokus lag und liegt auf der formallogischen Beschreibung unscharfer Rechtsbegriffe.Christian Baumann studierte an der Universität Karlsruhe sowie in einem einjährigen Auslandsaufenthalt an der University of Technology in Sydney, Australien, im Bereich Informationstechnologie und erhielt seinen Dipl.Inform.-Wirt. von der Universität Karlsruhe 2006. Nach seinem Studium begann er in der Softwareentwicklung bei der SAP AG in Walldorf. Seit 2008 arbeitet Christian Baumann als Research Associate am SAP Research Center in Karlsruhe und ist externer Doktorand am Zentrum für angewandte Rechtswissenschaften in der Forschungsgruppe Energieinformationsrecht und Rechtsinformatik. Zum Ende seiner Promotion verbrachte er einen neunmonatigen Forschungsaufenthalt an der University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley Center for Law and Technology. Seine Forschungssinteressen liegen im Bereich Urheberrecht und neue Technologien. In seiner Dissertation betrachtet er die formale Abbildung von geistigen Eigentumsrechten für den Einsatz in vernetzten technischen Systemen. Klaus-Dieter Schewe is Professor at the UIUC Institute of Zhejiang University. Before he had worked as Professor of Computer Science at the Technical University of Clausthal, Massey University and Johannes Kepler University Linz as well as in industrial and non-university research organisations of Philips Research Laboratory Hamburg and Software Competence Center Hagenberg. His main fields of research cover rigorous methods, logic and semantics, data and knowledge base theory, distributed and hybrid systems, and conceptual modelling, in particular web information systems. He received several awards as distinguished researcher in New Zealand and Austria.Bernhard Thalheim is Full Professor of Databases and Information Systems at Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and honorary Kolmogorov Professor at Moscow State University Lomonossov. Before being appointed to Kiel he worked as Professor at the Universities of Dresden, Rostock and Cottbus. His main fields of research cover databases and information systems, and conceptual modelling, in particular web information systems and foundations of modelling. He is author of the book "Entity-relationship modeling - foundations of database technology".
