(printed in German language only; looking for editions printed under licence): The fascinating history of German and European banks and bankers dynasties from the middelage up to the end of our millenium: famous families like Fugger, Warburg, Oppenheim, Liechtenstein etc. guarded their immens wealth and brought their business trough hunderts of years of turbulent European history. Their influence to the Wall Street community was enormous during the last century up to our days. It is also the history of Jewesh emancipation and Jewesh tragedy: the most important privat banks of Germany were owned by Jewesh families. Many of them first lost their assets and than their lifes under Nazi terror. Only one Jewesh bank survived the darkness: Warburg in Hamburg. Swiss author Fred David tells these dramatic stories of ascent and decline in the easy manner of a journalist who is interested not only in economic history but also in the people behind, in their careers, their hidden lifes, their affairs in business - and love. The man who wanted to buy the Deutsche Bank: The Story of Jakob Goldschmidt as a draft for a filmscript (chapter 4). Jakob Goldschmidt is one of the most fascinating personalities of the international finance world. There is hardly any literature, no film and no biography on him. However, this man came from nowhere, vera nearly bought one of the largest banks in the world, the Deutsche Bank. Against the scene of the Berlin of the klate twenties parallels to our decade come to light: stock exchange euphoria, mega mergers, corruption as a mass phenomenon. Seventy years ago all this was there once already - before the big bang of 1929. For the first time the career of this unusual banker is described in detail in chapter 4 (The man who wanted to buy the Deutsche Bank; p. 162 ff.) As a war-profiteer he rose from impecunious apprentice to be a tycoon and idol of the stock exchange. He had seats in over one hundred company advisory boards, he was the celebrated star of Berlin's society. Acting like a dictator, he was at the same time a great sponsor of the arts and a ladies man. He managed the megadeals of his time: the merger between Daimler and Benz, the founding of the largest steelconglomerate after the U.S.-Steel-deal of his idol John Pierpont Morgan. His was on freindly terms with the largest money makers of his time, wich he financed: Stinnes and Flick. The roaring twenties form the background. Business was discussed in an atmosphere of abundant walth, Ufa-glamour an cocain in the villas of Neubabelsberg cloesed to the largest moviestudios of the time. Goldschmidts garden parties were famous, the big fianciers prowled arround at his aparies like tigers lying in wait. Occasionally strange figures also left theior leader coats an whips in the cloakroom: Here the unsettled Nazis were introduced to the world of money an power. They were presented as exotic acquisitions from threatening social classes, an exciting amusement for the noble society. When on <> 1929 the New York Stock Exchange collapsed, this was refistered in the Berlin of the phonies and the blinded only as a far off roll of thunder. Not until two years later the great bank crash draged Jakob Goldschmidt into ruin. Only now the fact that he was a Jew became relevant. His spectacular fall paved the Nazis' way to power. Jakob Goldschmidt fled to the USA, where he died in 1955, fogotten by the rest of the world. The figure of Jakob Goldschmidt provides for an ideal draft for a filmscript full of emotions, refined intrigues, with strong characters set out against the background of turbulent events during an exciting time and with many actual references: stock exchange crashes in Asia and the Berlin wich in the coming years , will also internationally once again become a big subject for many people around the world.
