Inhaltsangabe

Thomas J. Schoonover's "The Life and Times of Gen'l John A. Sutter" traces the rise and fall of John Augustus Sutter, a charismatic Swiss-born adventurer whose grand ambitions in colonial California collided with the forces of empire, migration, and greed. The book follows Sutter as he carves out a semi-feudal world near the Sacramento Valley-building a fortress-like settlement, relying on Indigenous labor, and pursuing land, wealth, and legitimacy. Yet Sutter's fortunes are repeatedly tested by political upheaval, shifting borders, and the relentless uncertainty of frontier life. At the center of the story is the explosive moment when Sutter's plans intersect with the California Gold Rush-an event that transforms The Life and Times of Gen'l John A. Sutter is an unchanged, high-quality reprint of the original edition of 1895.
