This book offers new insights into the complex interactions between languages in the bilingual mind. The focus is on motion event typology and the acquisition of Spanish as an L2. Inter- and intra-typological contrasts between Spanish, German, French and Italian are examined, revealing differences in the lexicalisation of Manner, Path, Deixis and Cause. These differences trigger conceptual transfer processes in second language acquisition. Restructuring meanings in the L2 is found to be challenging for learners of both typologically different and typologically similar languages. It is suggested that L2 competence can be strengthened pedagogically through the use of translation and mediation activities in L2 instruction.
