Further, it demonstrates how to develop mathematical models for blood and other physiological fluids, such as cerebrospinal fluid, all in the context of research on cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
The book is based on two Master’s courses and a PhD Winter School course taught at the University of Trento, Italy. Its target audience includes Master’s students and PhD researchers in engineering, mathematics, computer science, and medicine, but it will also benefit medical professionals, researchers and academics.

Eleuterio F. Toro is currently an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Trento, Italy. For several decades his research has focused on the development of computational methods for solving partial differential equations, with special emphasis on hyperbolic balance laws and applications to environmental and industrial problems. For the past fifteen years he has been investigating the biophysical aspects of neurodegenerative diseases and its relation to the altered dynamical interaction of multi-materials in the central nervous system (arterial blood, venous blood, interstitial fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, the brain parenchyma and the newly discovered brain glymphatic system). Professor Toro has written numerous research articles and books, including the standard work Riemann Solvers and Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics: A Practical Introduction, published by Springer.
