Hoy en día, la optimización del sistema informático, tanto a nivel de hardware como de software, debe considerar los detalles del sistema de memoria en su análisis; si no lo hace, se obtienen sistemas que son cada vez más ineficientes a medida que esos sistemas se vuelven más complejos. Esta conferencia busca presentar al lector los detalles más importantes del sistema de memoria; se dirige tanto a científicos informáticos como a ingenieros informáticos en la industria y en la academia. En términos generales, los científicos informáticos son los usuarios del sistema de memoria y los ingenieros informáticos son los diseñadores del sistema de memoria. Ambos pueden beneficiarse enormemente de una comprensión básica de cómo funciona realmente el sistema de memoria: el científico informático estará mejor equipado para crear algoritmos que funcionen bien y el ingeniero informático estará mejor equipado para diseñar sistemas que se acerquen a lo óptimo, dadas las limitaciones de recursos. Somewhat inexplicably, most of the research in the field is still directed toward improving the CPU to better tolerate a slow memory system, as opposed to addressing the weaknesses of the memory system directly. This lecture should get the bulk of the computer science and computer engineering population up the steep part of the learning curve. Not every CS/CE researcher/developer needs to do work in the memory system, but, just as a carpenter can do his job more efficiently if he knows a little of architecture, and an architect can do his job more efficiently if he knows a little of carpentry, giving the CS/CE worlds better intuition about the memory system should help them build better systems, both software and hardware.
